SATURDAY RIDES:
What kind of rides ?
These are rides for those getting back into cycling, those just starting out in cycling and those who want a short, slow, social ride.
Meet where ?
Stonington Public Schools Administration/Board of Education Parking Lots, 49 North Stonington Road, Old Mystic. Just North of the Old Mystic Firehouse "
Meet when ?
10:00 every Saturday morning, Year "round".
Where does the ride go ?
There will be an out-and-back ride on River Road in Mystic and a loop ride on Lantern Hill Rd, Whitford Rd and Shewville Rd. The rides will not deviate from this route.
How far ?
The River Road ride is 5.5 miles, but it can be cut short at any point since it is an out-and-back ride. The Lantern Hill etc. loop is also 5.5 miles. These routes connect in Old Mystic and can be ridden separately or back-to-back. The cue sheet sends riders out on the River Road section first in case someone wants to cut the ride short of 5 miles.
How hilly ?
Both rides are on some of the flattest roads available in our area and are very close to being totally flat.
How fast ?
The rides are intended to be slow with the riders staying together and regrouping if someone falls behind. However, riders must ride single file when in traffic, but two abreast is permissible on open roads.
Will there be cue sheets ?
There will be a cue sheet and route map published in the newsletter - SAVE IT - it may the only one you get. Since the rides will be the same each week, however, the cue sheet will be necessary only for the first few rides.
Will there be a ride starter ?
No, since all old members have received cue sheets, all new members will receive cue sheets and several riders are familiar with the very simple route, there is no need for a ride starter. Whoever shows up does the ride at their pace and distance, but the riders must stay together or regroup often. Sometimes you may ride alone, but there will be another ride the next week, same time, same place, so hopefully the next week there will be more riders. No rides will be cancelled as there is no one to cancel them, but use your own judgment in case of inclement weather, etc. Tom Jannke will be monitoring the Saturday rides from time to time so questions and comments should be directed to him.
Will the rides be swept ?
No, the riders must be self-sufficient if riding alone and look out for each other, if riding in a group. Also, there are houses along most of the route if help is needed.
What is required of the riders ?
The desire to get out and ride your bike, an APPROVED CYCLING HELMET, a properly functioning and equipped bike and adequate clothing, water, spare tube, etc. Please obey all traffic laws, especially with respect to stop signs, stop lights and in single file in the presence of cars.
Can I bring friends ?
No, because of the modern legal climate and because there will be no release of liability form, this ride must be for Pequot Cyclists Members only. That said, however, anyone can ride on these public roads, they just cannot be a part of these rides and cue sheets have been given only to Club members. Please do not give your cue sheet to non-members.
Will riders be able to meet, socialize and get some food before or after the ride ?
Yes, at the intersection of Shewville Rd and Route 184 there is a small shopping mall. "Somewhere in Time" is a small breakfast and lunch restaurant on the far end of the building. They serve from 7:00 am to 2:15 pm on Saturdays nearly year 'round.
Enjoy cycling and we hope to see you on some of these rides,
