Saturday, April 6, 2019, “Get Out Into Spring Hike”, Goodwin State Forest Conservation Center, 23 Potter Rd, Hampton, CT 06247

This hike is open to Friends of Goodwin State Forest, Pequot Cyclists and the general public for a  2 – 3 hour hike taking in Brown Hill Loop, and Governor’s Island along well-marked woods roads, pathways and trails over moderate to hilly terrain, covering the East side of Pine Acres Pond.

Early Spring conditions in Windham Co. may require layered outdoor clothing that can be adjusted for warmer conditions.  Bring gaiters, hiking poles and tractions devices (micro spikes),  should snow or ice and mud conditions prevail.  Bring cup, water, a favorite hot beverage mix (tea, chocolate, instant coffee (for heating on leader-supplied stove) and optional snacks for a stop at the Governor’s Island overlook.  This outing is not open to dogs.

Plan is to celebrate this winter hiking season at The Vanilla Bean, corner of Rt. 97 and Rts 44/169 in Pomfret immediately following.

Meet at 9:45 AM at Goodwin State Forest Headquarters, 23  Potter Rd. parking lot, on right, just past the center, off Rt. 6, Hampton, CT 06247 for 10:00 AM start.

Directions from the South:

Come to Norwich via any accessible route and enter Interstate 395 North. 

Take Exit 18, “Norwich, Occum, Hanover, Versailles” and turn left at the end of exit ramp, onto CT. Rt. 97 – Taftville-Occum Rd. / Baltic Rd.

Travel to the second stop sign at center of Baltic.  Continue right on Rt. 97, toward Scotland, across the Shetucket River, 5-6 miles to the stop sign at Scotland center. 

Continue right on Rt. 97/Rt. 14, toward Winchester – Canterbury, to the top of the first hill and turn left onto Rt. 97 – Pudding Hill Rd. for 5-6 miles to a stop sign at Rt. 6.

Turn left onto Rt. 6 and travel about 2 miles and turn right onto Potter Rd. at hanging DEEP  CT sign, and turn right into the Goodwin State Forest HQs first, or second parking lot, where we will meet.
